Kamimura Gakuen High School

Kamimura Gakuen High School — 神村学園 in Japanese — is the newest of Japan's major school football programmes and, at the moment, the most successful. The club was founded in 2001 in Ichikikushikino, a small coastal city in Kagoshima at the southern end of the country, and within twenty-five years it has won both national titles. In 2025 it took the Inter-High, the summer tournament, for the first time in its history and the first time for any school from Kagoshima; in January 2026 it won the 104th All Japan High School Soccer Tournament, beating Kashima Gakuen 3-0 in the final. Winning the summer and the winter title in the same school year is rare enough that Japanese reporters simply call it the double. The team plays in the Premier League WEST.

Playing style

The club describes what it plays as an attacking passing game, and it means it literally: possession is built from the goalkeeper, and the way the team positions itself is used to make the opponent's pressing line irrelevant rather than to escape it. What turned that into a winning side rather than an admired one is physical work. A full-time physical coach with a professional background was brought in in 2019, and the team now combines the technical game with sprint capacity that holds up for ninety minutes and real strength in duels.

The other half of the method is how the coach behaves. He deliberately avoids shouting instructions during matches, and expects problems on the pitch to be solved by the players talking to each other. Both national titles in 2025-26 were won from behind or on penalties, which is the argument for it.

The 2025 Inter-High run says something about the side: a quarter-final won on penalties, a semi-final turned round with the last play of the match, and a final that was level at 2-2 in stoppage time and won 7-6 on penalties.

History

2001 — The football club is founded, with TAKEMOTO Masaki as its first manager. He is still with the programme, now as director of football.
2006 — In only its fifth season the club reaches the national semi-finals of the winter championship at its first appearance, which is not how the hierarchy of Japanese school football normally works.
2007 — Inter-High semi-finals, confirming the first run was not an accident.
2011–2016 — Six years of losing the Kagoshima final to Kagoshima Josei, five head-to-head defeats in a row. Behind that, the six-year pathway from the school's junior high is being built.
2014 — ARIMURA Keiichiro becomes manager. He came through another Kagoshima school and won the winter championship as a player in 1995.
2017–2018 — Two consecutive seasons of winning all three Kagoshima titles, and the prefecture changes hands.
2019 — AZUMA Teruaki joins as physical coach, from Higashi Fukuoka, Honda FC and two professional clubs.
2025 — The Inter-High, at J-Village in Fukushima: a first national title.
2026 — The 104th winter championship in January, and with it the double. In the summer the side reached the third round of the Inter-High, going out on penalties to Toko Gakuen.

Development pathway

Four things explain a club that did not exist before 2001 winning everything by 2026.

Psychological safety as a method, not a slogan. The manager's stated approach is to avoid adding stress, to watch rather than direct during matches, and to leave problems on the pitch to the players. It is also why the club keeps winning penalty shoot-outs and matches it is losing with two minutes left.
A six-year pathway from the junior high. Kamimura Gakuen Junior High feeds the senior team directly: in the 2020 winter championship squad, 17 of the 30 players had come through it. Six years of the same vocabulary and the same technical basics — stopping, passing, carrying — is what allows a passing game to be played at this speed at 16.
A professional physical department. From 2019 the training has been periodised on sports-science lines. The purpose is specific: to remove the fragility that technical teams are usually accused of.
Its own pitch, and recruitment from the whole country. The club trains daily on an artificial pitch at the school. The squad now draws not only from Kyushu but from Osaka, from the Tokai region and beyond — a long way for a 15-year-old to move, and an indication of the programme's standing.

Former players

FUKUDA Shio (forward, Karlsruher SC) and YOSHINAGA Yumeki (defender, KRC Genk) — both went abroad straight from school, without playing in the J.League first.
TACHIBANADA Kento (midfielder, Kawasaki Frontale) — the clearest product of the club's passing game, and the heart of his team's midfield.
OSAKO Rui (Cerezo Osaka) and NAWATA Gaku (Gamba Osaka) — attacking players fought over by J.League clubs on leaving school.
NISHIMARU Minto (Vegalta Sendai) and TAKAHASHI Daigo (Giravanz Kitakyushu) — from the earlier years of the current coaching staff.
HOSOYAMADA Ryoma — playing in Spain.
From the double-winning year of 2025-26: HIDAKA Hajime (RB Omiya Ardija), the winter tournament's top scorer; FUKUSHIMA Kazuki (Avispa Fukuoka); TOKUMURA Futa (FC Machida Zelvia); and NAKANO Haruto and ARAKI Masato (both Iwaki FC). NAKANO Haruto captained the side that won the final.

Technicians, runners and out-and-out strikers: the club does not produce one type of player.

Players worth knowing in the 2026 season:

TAKENO Futa (defender, third year) — the captain, and a Japan international at the 2025 U-17 World Cup in Qatar.
OZORA Sena (defender, third year) — joined from Kamatamare Sanuki's junior youth team in Shikoku, named in the Japan High School Select squad, and has signed for Shimizu S-Pulse from January 2027.
HANASHIRO Eita (midfielder, third year) — also in the Japan High School Select squad, and a scorer at the 2026 Inter-High.
KUBO Tasuku (goalkeeper, third year) — first choice, and one of the junior high graduates.
FUSHIHARA Riku (midfielder, third year) — three goals in the early rounds of the 2026 Premier League WEST.
OKANO Tsunato (forward, third year) — level with him on three, and a product of a small Kyushu club rather than an academy.
NAKAE Ginji (midfielder, third year) — scored at the 2026 Inter-High.
KODAMA Tona (midfielder, second year), UENO Rui (midfielder, second year) and MASUDA Soichiro (midfielder, second year) — second-years in the registered squad; Kodama and Masuda have both played in the 2026 Premier League WEST.

The split is deliberate: players from the junior high form what the club calls the tactical spine, and players recruited nationally bring the individual technique.
